Yingying is a little girl whom my family sponsored when she was admitted to the children’s hospital with acquired liver cancer at three years old. For the next three years, my family walked alongside her on her recovery journey. Every time I video chatted with her, her physical mobility was limited to her hospital bed; the tiny bed was her entire world.
Inside my acrylic box, which resembles the sick Yingying, she is painted as being restricted within it. A current picture of Yingying, showing that she is fully recovered and living her life as a normal kid, is printed on the outside of the acrylic box. The image is adorned with yellow and pink spray paint representing birthdays, which blurs her past yet highlights her present.
